How Tutoring
Works
UCAN will host all English lessons through Google Classroom. Tutors will be able to choose what setting they prefer to teach in, either in a group setting or a one-to-one setting. They may also choose to teach in both settings. Most of our classes will be in groups of 8-10 students, but some of our students may request one-to-one assistance. Classes will be 30-45 minutes. Private tutoring is more flexible, as the duration of the session will be based on the need of the student.
Classes will be a weekly commitment. You will be able to choose your own schedule, timings, and preferred tutoring setting, private, or group. However, we cannot guarantee that you will receive your requested time or day, so please keep your options open.
Finally, UCAN will provide every tutor with a complete set of course material to teach off of, including lessons and homework. Each week in advance, we will send out all the necessary lesson plans and class materials in a comprehensive email. The only thing tutors may need to come up with themselves are creative methods of teaching to keep their classes fun and interactive.
How to become a Tutor
Step 1: Check to see if you meet our requirements.
Step 2: Fill out a tutor interest form.
Step 3: Complete the tutor preference form upon receiving. You will receive the tutor preference form (via email) 3-5 days after you fill out the tutor interest form. Please note that you may be put on a waiting list depending on the amount of students and tutors we have.
Step 4: Check for an email regarding your application. You should expect an email that either a) accepts your application and welcomes you to the team or b) informs you that you have been placed on a waiting list. This email should be expected 3-5 days after you fill out the tutor preference form from Step 3.
Step 5: If you have received the acceptance email from Step 4, congratulations, you are a UCAN tutor! You will be contacted shortly to discuss the training program and given more information pertaining your role.
After you undergo the training program, we will pair you with another tutor and assign you a class to teach. You will be provided all the necessary information and materials to conduct a successful English class!
How General Volunteering Works
UCAN will have a variety of events such as donation drives and fundraisers that will be open to the public. Our General Volunteers will be responsible for participating in these events as well as spreading the word about these events. They will also be in charge of making cards for our students' birthdays and holidays! Lastly, a general volunteer may act as a substitute for our tutors in case of an absence. Please note, general volunteers who will also double as substitutes will undergo the same training process as our tutors.
As a general volunteer, you have the option to decide what events you would like to participate in. There is not a set amount of time that general volunteers have to participate per week. However, if you are looking for an approximation, general volunteers would spend around 10-30 minutes per week checking for any event updates on our website. The amount of time needed to participate in our events will all depend on you, of course.
